MAMI WATA RISING INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
Susie King Taylor and Sadako SasakI : Heroines of War and Peace
August 6, 2021~4th ANNUAL MAMI WATA RISING INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE Susie King Taylor and Sadako SasakI : Heroines of War and Peace Susie King Taylor was born on August 6, 1848, enslaved on a plantation in Liberty County, Georgia. On August 6, 1945, an atomic bomb destroyed Sadako Sasaki’s hometown of Hiroshima, Japan. Susie King Taylor’s escape to freedom at age 13 is just part of the great, uplifting story of survival by one of history’s great champions of literacy. Sadako Sasaki survived the destruction of Hiroshima, but died from radiation fallout a decade later at age 12. Sadako attempted to fold 1,000 origami peace cranes as a wish to get well, inspiring the adoption of the paper crane as an international symbol and call for world peace.
